One Dish, Two Ways!

Mamma Mia Burgers

Mamma Mia Burgers

Hi everyone! Last week Shay and I made two Italian-ish burgers in honor of the new Mamma Mia movie! Shay’s has meat while mine does not 🙂

Mamma Mia Burger (Shay’s Way)

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb breakfast sausage (we used Owen’s hot sausage)
  • 2 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • Garlic salt and cracked black pepper (use liberal amounts)
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced pepperoni
  • Sliced red onion
  • Marinara sauce
  • Hamburger buns
  • Basil (garnish)

Combine all ingredients and form patties. Grill on a medium setting until well browned on both sides (about 8-9 minutes per side). Place a slice of mozzarella cheese and a little pepperoni on top of the patties and let melt before removing from grill. Consider also spreading a little butter on the buns and toasting the buns on the grill for a few minutes. To assemble, spread a little marinara sauce (or pesto) onto the buns before placing a patty on top of the buns. Add tomato and onion if you would like.

Mamma Mia Burger (Shan’s Plan)

  • 1 cup cooked quinoa
  • 1 cup cooked lentils
  • ¼ to ⅓ cup pesto
  • 1 egg or 1 chia egg
  • Minced garlic (several teaspoons)
  • Italian seasonings
  • Sage (around 1-2 tsp)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Gluten-free bread/hamburger buns
  • Pesto or marinara sauce
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced red onion
  • Basil (garnish)

Combine all ingredients and form patties. Grill on a medium setting until lightly browned on both sides (about 6 minutes per side). Consider also spreading a little butter on your bread/buns and toasting them on the grill for a few minutes. To assemble, spread a little marinara sauce (or pesto) onto the buns before building your burger. Add tomato and onion if you would like.

I was a bit vague with the spice amounts because you’ll likely need liberal amounts, especially for my version. If you use a flax or chia egg, you can taste as you go 🙂 My burgers held together pretty well but as a safety precaution, we placed my patties on top of a grill basket that was sprayed well with PAM.

Hope you all are staying cool inside! We’ve had temperatures in the 100s the past week and it’s been miserable!!!
